Why should your jeans be organic?

November 17th, 2008

Shopping for the right pair of jeans can be a never ending quest that we all embark on because, let’s face it, we wear them a lot.  Jeans in our culture are wardrobe staples no longer relegated to weekend wear.  Casual Fridays and more relaxed corporate dress codes have some of us building a week-long repertoire of denim that may include different washes, leg openings and waist and rise fits from  high to low. In the last couple of years we’ve seen the introduction of yet one more choice, organic cotton denim.

While it may be impossible to rationalize the need for one more option, this is a choice that we hope to see more designers and manufacturers support.  Why?

  • Because conventional cotton accounts for 10% of global pesticide use. It takes 2/3 of a pound of pesticides to make just one pair of conventional cotton denim jeans.  That’s approximately a can of soup full of pesticides for each pair of conventional cotton denim jeans produced.
  • Pesticides used in conventional cotton production are not only harmful to the environment but also to the cotton farm workers. According to the EPA, five of the top nine pesticides used in cotton production in the US (cyanide, dicofol, naled, propargite, and trifluralin) are known cancer-causing chemicals.

Here’s the great news.  Several designers have really gotten behind organic cotton production.  The styling, fit and wash choices are as luxurious as those offered by conventional premium denim lines.  We especially love the Del Forte denim line.  Not only  do they make beautiful jeans, they are also manufacturing their product responsibly by forming partnerships with farmers and the community to help educate on the environmental benefits of sustainable farming.  With their inspiring Project Rejeaneration, Del Forte takes their commitment to the environment one step further by taking back your used Del Forte jeans to recycle into new styles.  Check out Del Forte denim on www.fcpcares.com.  LINK to our styles on the website.

Business Dress: How to Add Your Own Style

September 15th, 2008

Lately, we have been hearing the same question asked, “How do I incorporate my fashion sense into the “stuffy” business environment?”  Even though it feels like many offices have moved into the business-casual dress code, we have found that many more are moving away from this dress code and are moving back into the strict business attire only.  Why? Because many offices became confused on what was business-casual and what was weekend wear only.

Here are several ideas that will help jumpstart your wardrobe, and make you feel like the confident business person that you are!

Dilemma:  Wearing the same black suit everyday?
Solution:  Add color!  This fall is packed with beautiful jewel tones that instantly update a basic black, grey or brown suit and keep you polished and professional!
Banana Republic

Dilemma:  What accessories can make my style complete, without feeling overdone?
Solution:   Accessories will complete outfits this Fall.  A few to focus on:

Cashmere Scarves.  Totally appropriate in the business environment.  An easy way to update AND add color to your basic suit attire.  We adore the ones from Bajra

Jewelry.  Add a statement piece.  Unbutton your basic woven and tuck a necklace that is classic and bold.
Alexis Bittar has a piece that can go from work to evening.

If you’re not a necklace person, try adding bangles for an extra punch.
Jcrew

Dilemma:  Finding a bag that is professional (and practical) for day.
Solution:   Find a statement piece that can instantly take you from basic to chic.

If meeting after work, throw a clutch into your handbag and instantly move into evening!

Top 10 Fall Fashion Must Haves for 2008

August 25th, 2008

Ok.. we have developed the list .. our Top 10 must haves for Fall!

1. Total Slouch
Pants are being worn slouchy. Let them rest on the hips, find ones that fit through the hips and flares out to a full-leg. Watch your legs grow an inch!

2. Dark Angels
In the fashion world you’re hearing alot of talk with the word “Gothic” included. We like to take a softer approach for the fashionista’s who are afraid to take a walk on the “wild side”. Think: Lace. Dark Colors. Makeup. Fabrications. Take inspiration from this look by Alexander McQueen

or pull out your old leather jacket and make it look new again. If you need a updated leather jacket, look at Hanii Y for inspiration:

3. Flower Child
The newness that we are seeing so much of is Winter Florals! Transition a patterned dress into next season, by adding a long cardigan, tights and Mary Janes!

4. Jewel Box
We saw the colors that were displayed at the Fall Fashion shows in Februrary.. It’s finally here! The rich Majestic Purples, Royal Blues, Emerald Greens… C’est Chic!  Add a pop of color and instantly update your wardrobe.

Both available at bananarepublic.com

5. Bow Blouses
Bow blouses have replaced the necklace, as the accessory of choice!
We love the feel of this blouse from Marni

6. On the Move -Skirts!
Bell Skirts are so sophisticated! Tuck in your blouses, add a jacket and you’re ready for whatever the day brings you!
Gap has one that won’t break the bank:

We love the print on this Tibi skirt. Available at www.net-a-porter.com

7. Jeanswear
Need we say or show more? We know that many things are going on in the denim world, high-waisted, skinny, pintuck, trouser… however we wanted to show one more! The boyfriend jeans. The live-in-your husband jeans. We don’t recommend these for work, but they are great for weekend wear!

Find them at singer22.com

8. Mad about Plaid.
Plaid, as we all know can be very “school-girl” like… you thought the uniform days were over? We don’t recommend head-to-toe plaid.. because it can quickly be overdone! Add just a single piece to your wardrobe. Like a skirt, scarf, trench. Think sophistication when purchasing. You don’t want to look like you’re headed back to grade school!

www.neimanmarcus.com

9. OMBRE! OMBRE!
Casual Chic: From Vince

10. Oxfords!
We are crazy about flat oxfords! This allows the woman who is on the go, a break from heels… with true fashion of her own! Try a few from Dolce Vita

This has a small heel.. for the flat frenemies!

Don’t try to go shopping in just 1 trip! Too many mistakes could be made! Make your own Style File and go on the search!

One-on-One with Terri Stevens of Project Runway

August 15th, 2008

Terri Stevens: Independent Fashion Designer
As seen on Bravo! Project Runway, Every Wednesday, 9pm.

Ok, Columbus, let’s get ourselves on the map!  One of Columbus’s own has been recognized as a talented, up-and-coming fashion designer. We recently had the opportunity to speak with Terri regarding her experiences thus far in the fashion industry and the opportunity that she has received from Bravo’s Project Runway.  Wardrobe Therapy interviews Terri on the Fall trends of ’08 and Fashion Designers that have inspired her career.

Q & A:

Wardrobe Therapy:  What would you say is your own personal style? Has anyone helped influence you more, specifically?

Terri: My style pretty much stays the same.  Evolving a little here and there.  I love denim, mostly Levi’s and Diesel or anything that fits the way I like it.  I am a tomboy,  That’s it! That’s all!  I try to look like a dancer most times but with a b-boy edge.  Most of the time I leave a little underwear hanging out for fun, like ghetto gold.  But I can flip it all around and go Galliano/McQueen on you with the quickness.

Wardrobe Therapy:  What is your favorite fabrication/trend that you see to be important for Fall ’08?

Terri: I live for fall/winter.  I love layers and layers of cloths.  I can wear at least 12 layers in the fall in a heartbeat.  I really don’t follow trends but like inventing them. I do think Michael Jackson has started a lot of trends that people don’t give him credit for, like the thriller and beat it jackets, the military gear he rocks, and his cropped pants with dress socks. Fall to me is textures mix with bold prints and colors paired with some sick and delicious heels.  My hair also plays an important role.  At most times my hair is my hat.  It’s so big that it shields me from the bitter cold winds of winter.

Wardrobe Therapy:  Where do you find the majority of your inspiration?  Is it a specific city? Artist? Subway? Music?

Terri: I am always inspired by everything around me.  Music–hip-hop, punk, funk, rock plays a very important part.  I can play some Michael or some Prince and an entire collection can be whipped out in minutes.  I have been watching The Wiz lately and see a collection inspired by that in my future. Chicago is very inspiring.  It’s a very beautiful city and the house music that thrives throughout the streets is serious. Sub cultures are amazing sources of inspiration. Old photos of my mom gets me a sketching.

Wardrobe Therapy:  Tell us a little bit about your experiences being on TV…Are people recognizing you when you are out and about now?   Give us the Scoop!

Terri: People are noticing me everywhere I go.  Some come up to me and practically blush and cry.  Some just stare, point and whisper, then come up to me.  I don’t mind it at all.  It’s great that people get so into the show and really root for this person or that person.  I definitely have a fan base growing in Chicago, Columbus and Minnesota where my mom lives.  But it seems that I’ve (gone) global. Miami, LA, Paris, and Brazil (I’m sure because of my husband being Brazilian and all). To be completely honest, I would always tell myself and others that I was meant to be on tv.  I wanted this more than anything, and to meet Michael Jackson, dress Madonna, Janet, Diana, Oprah you name it.  This is a competition about talent.  People don’t care about race, creed, or color. They care about what you can produce and hopefully your pretty darn entertaining doing it.

Wardrobe Therapy:  We know we can’t inquire too much…but where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Terri: I have always had this vision of owning several boutiques.  Definitely, one in Chicago, New York, Paris, London, and Brazil pretty much the world.  I do know I will keep it moving. Can’t stand still and won’t stand still.  I want to look at all opportunities big and small. Make the small ones really big.  You never know what can happen.

Wardrobe Therapy:  Ok, so Columbus may not be New York City… but where is your favorite place in our city that you feel is a “hidden gem”?

Terri: There’s a great place on the outskirts of Columbus called Captain Betty’s and you an find some delicious pieces for you to wear and steal the scene or furniture for your home to create a scene.  I love Jinny’s in the Short North.  The store carries underground designers from all over the world.  I like the fact that she doesn’t carry your household names. Although, I hope I am featured in her store soon (Hint, Hint).  Columbus has wonderful vintage and thrift stores. Hit high street and look left and right while you drive/walk because there are lots of hidden stores with great finds. Grandview Mercantile

We know that you’re getting ready to “sew your next stitch”… and we’re excited to see where this journey takes you!

Circus Circus

July 28th, 2008

The summer has been filled with a lot of great outdoor events…many fashion shows held at the local bars, but nothing quite like this.  The night began with some beer and ribs at the Jazz festival (not to mention some fabulous music)!

But from there we took a stroll down Front Street to support one of favorite causes, Dress For Success. Charles Penzone and CMagazine teamed up to present Circus Circus, a hair and make-up fashion show extravaganza.  All door proceeds benefited this great charity.

For all of the people who just wanted something to do… drinks were a plenty…and entertainment (or just good people watching) was definitely on hand.

Some of my favorite pics are included for the evening..
