WHAT DEFINES A “FORMAL” WEDDING LOOK?

A formal wedding calls for an elegant, polished outfit that reflects the significance of the occasion. We recommend reaching for refined fabrics such as silk, satin, crepe, or chiffon, along with silhouettes that feel timeless and sophisticated.

For women, floor-length gowns are always a beautiful choice. For men, a dark, well-tailored suit is the standard. A tuxedo fits seamlessly into this dress code, as well.

When choosing your look, pay attention to the overall setting. An evening celebration in a grand ballroom naturally calls for a more elevated outfit than a formal ceremony held outdoors.

A formal wedding invite can feel daunting at times, but we see it as an exciting opportunity to elevate your look in a way we don’t often get to do!

This dress from Pamella Roland is checking every box for us. Chocolate brown is one of our favorite alternatives to classic black for formal weddings. It feels rich, modern, and incredibly elegant.

Styled with metallic gold heels, a suede clutch, and sculptural gold jewelry, this look strikes that sweet spot between polished and effortless. It’s a combination you’ll reach for whenever the invitation calls for timeless style with a fresh perspective.

WHAT DEFINES A “SEMI-FORMAL” WEDDING LOOK?

Semi-formal (aka “cocktail”) offers a little more flexibility while still calling for an outfit that feels polished and intentional. This dress code leaves room for personality through color, texture, and styling without sacrificing sophistication.

For women, cocktail dresses, midi dresses, chic jumpsuits, and coordinated sets are all wonderful options. For men, a tailored suit remains the safest choice, though lighter colors and seasonal fabrics often feel right for daytime or warm-weather weddings. Depending on the venue and time of day, a tie may be optional.

Whenever we’re styling for a semi-formal wedding, we encourage clients to consider the details surrounding the event. The location, season, invitation, and ceremony time all provide subtle cues that help determine just how dressed up your look should feel.

CHRISTINE’S “SEMI-FORMAL” LOOK

This simple Juliett Plisse midi dress by AMUR will turn heads! The sculpted sweetheart neckline frames the collarbone to maximize elegance while the rich, flowing pleats add texture and movement.

The earthy, fern hue is ideal for year-round wear to all your semi-formal events. It’s the perfect balance of timeless romance and contemporary sophistication.

Although this dress pairs well with silver or even pearls, I chose gold accessories to add some warmth.

Dressy casual gives guests the freedom to embrace a more relaxed style while still honoring the occasion. Comfort certainly has a place here, though every piece should still feel polished and thoughtfully chosen.

Women can look to midi dresses, flowing skirts, matching sets, or tailored pants paired with an elevated blouse.

Men often find success with dress pants, a button-down shirt, loafers, and a blazer that can easily be added or removed throughout the celebration.

We always encourage clients to remember that they are attending a wedding, regardless of how relaxed the dress code may be. Clean lines, polished shoes, and elevated fabrics go a long way toward creating a look that feels appropriate while still allowing your personal style to shine.

CANDACE’S “DRESSY CASUAL” LOOK

Stylist Notes – In Candace’s Words:

When the invitation calls for elevated casual dress, what should I wear? The ‘elevated casual’ request can often cause panic, as that dress code can be interpreted in a number of ways.

With that in mind, we like to encourage clients to select a dress that can flex—opting for something that strikes a balance in the middle. This way, if others are a bit more dressed up or down, you’ll feel relative to the room.

This dress by Staud does exactly the trick. It feels casual because of the poplin material, but the cut and some design details keep it elevated and crisp. To complete the look, I added a fun, yet simple earring and bangles for a touch of detail at the wrist to create visual interest.

And lastly, I added a nude strappy sandal, a great clutch and a wrap for a little color pop! The color pop in the wrap adds just a fun layer of playfulness and personality that makes the look more unique and special!
